Trailer: HBO’s The Leftovers (NSFW)

LOST’s co-creator Damon Lindelof is doing another show about missing people. He’s partnered with HBO for the new series The Leftovers. The stories revolves around people left behind after 2% of the world’s population mysteriously disappears. The is reminiscent of Kirk Cameron’s popular series Left Behind. Although the IMDB page for the show calls the disappearance a “rapture”, the trailer indicates nobody knows where the missing people went or why. And as a fan of Lindelof’s work, I don’t expect things on the show to be what they seem.

Here’s the synopsis via HBO.com:

When 2% of the world’s population abruptly disappears without explanation, the world struggles to understand just what they’re supposed to do about it. The new drama series ‘The Leftovers’ is the story of the people who didn’t make the cut.

Based on the bestselling novel by Tom Perrotta, ‘The Leftovers’ follows Kevin Garvey, a father of two and the chief of police in a small New York suburb, as he tries to maintain some semblance of normalcy when the notion no longer applies.

The trailer looks great. You can see the societal breakdown taking place after a massive rapture type event. There’s even a religious looking group in all white with an eerily quiet demeanor. It looks like the show will focus heavy on drama with a little sci-fi sprinkled on top. I’m hoping the show explores how people process catastrophic events differently.

The trailer also great use of James Blake’s Retrograde. I’m a sucker for well placed songs in trailers. HBO knocked it out the park with this one. Blake’s sad soulful ballad is the perfect song for this trailer.

The show stars Liv Tyler, Justin Theroux, Christopher Eccleston, and Carrie Coon.

With Lindelof on board as the show’s executive producer/showrunner and Friday Night Lights (TV) director Peter Berg behind the camera, I’m sure were in for some quality television.
