Oklahoma City Thunder star Serge Ibaka’s journey to the NBA is a fascinating to say the least. The new documentary from Grantland, Son of the Congo, tells Ibaka’s incredible story of desperation, dreams, and determination.

Serge Ibaka managed to escape the war-torn streets of the Congo and play his way to the top of the NBA. In ‘Son of the Congo,’ he returns to his native country, revisiting the empty lots where he used to sleep, reconnecting with his daughter, and confronting the stark reality facing Congolese youth. The odds are long, but Ibaka imparts his unshakable belief that a better future is possible if you never stop trying.
Grantland has produced some great documentaries in their 30 for 30 series over the past few years. If those films are any indication, Son of the Congo will be If you aren’t lucky enough to see it at SXSW this year, the full length documentary will be released for free on Grantland.com, March 23rd.
