Stuntman turned director J.J Perry brings audiences the latest action comedy, The Killer’s Game – an unhinged action film about hitman that accidently puts a hit on himself starring wrestler turned actor Dave Bautista.
The plot follows Joe Flood, one of the best assassins in Europe. After Joe falls in love with Maize (Sofia Boutella), he learns he has a terminal illness that will kill him in a few short months. Maize is unaware of Flood’s occupation and his illness. so Flood decides to put out a hit on himself so Maize can collect the life insurance once he’s gone.
As fate would have it, Flood got the wrong diagnosis. When Flood tries to cancel the contract on his life, Marianna (Pm Klementieff) refuses and raises the contract for Flood to $4 million. The new bounty attracts a wild group of assassins that includes The Party Girls (Lucy Cork and Shania West), Botas (Marko Zaror), Lovedahl (Terry Crews), and The Mackenzies (WWE’s Drew McIntyre and Scott Adkins). One of the best parts of the film is the introduction to the other assassins. The intros are so wild, they’re actually perfect for this film. As is standard for these types of stories, each group has a specific set of skills that makes them extraordinary assassins.
Flood goes on the run as he plans to take out the assassins before they get him.
The Killer’s Game, based on the 1997 novel by Rand Ravich and James Coyne, and is the most unserious action movie in years. It’s both unintentionally funny and laugh out loud hilarious. The paint-by-numbers script is elevated by animated performances from Terry Crews, Pom Klementieff, and Ben Kingsley.
To be clear, the film is less serious than the trailers show. It’s incredibly silly with over the top action and some of the cheesiest one-liners I’ve heard this year. The film does not take itself serious and that’s the perfect approach for telling this story. It helps fuel a wildly entertaining action film. To its credit, the film doesn’t try to be anything more than what it is. It’s best when it leans into how insane the premise is and how wild some the characters are.
The best performance and the one that gets the most laughs come via the priest. He’s only on screen for a short time but he makes the most of his screen time in the best way possible. The film could’ve of used more of him.
The Killer’s Game is exactly what you think it is. The film plays a little with romance, but it’s mostly action, comedy, and carnage. As crazy as this film is, some people will leave feeling very entertained. Levels of enjoyment may vary but if you enjoy a nice mindless action comedy, The Killer’s Game may meet your needs.
