BoneBat Comedy of Horrors Film Festival

BoneBat’s Comedy of Horrors film festival made its way to SIFF Cinema Downtown fka Cinerama. It’s the perfect venue for a film festival, especially one as wildly entertaining as BoneBat’s.

The gasp, laughs, and slashes were back this year with three exceptional blocks of horror short films, two feature films, and a performance from The Phantom A.D. There’s lots of poop, pizza, and WTF moments in this year’s submissions.

You can check out more of what Steve and Gord have going on here.

Below are some of my favorites from this year’s festival.

La Visitante (The Visitor) was one of the scary offerings. Director Tony Morales tells a nightmare story about a woman that seems someone on her ring camera. There’s some great tension and a very good jump scare towards the end.

Roger is a Serial Killer is a hilarious play on true crime podcast. Director Don Swaynos delivers a timely horror comedy, especially the podcast ads that play during the short.

To Hell With You follows Brendan after he’s been possessed an killed by a priest. With his soul in limbo, and angel and demon try to figure out where he will spend eternal life. Andrew Bourne, Brett Brooks, and Erin Ownbey are fantastic in this.

Pizza Panic Party is a pizza party that takes a very dangerous turn. The short by Graham Denman delivers some of the best body horror of the festival.

Banjo is one of the funnier submissions to this year’s festival. A young man is losing his virginity at a cabin but has some insecurities about his penis. It’s a laugh out loud short that absolutely delivers at the end.

Orum follows a woman attempting to bring her mother back from the dead. As you could imagine, things don’t go as planned. You may notice some familiar horror icons.

Strange Creatures is one of the other straight up scary shorts. A woman receives a call from her late brother and goes to investigate. Nicholas Payne Santos delivers a very creepy story in under 6 mins.

Shitty Ride is a double entendre that delivered some of the biggest laughs and WTF moments of the festival. Very rarely am I grossed out but this short really pushed my limits.

Freddy Comes is a hilarious take on Freddy Krueger finally meeting his match. Sarah Stephens delivers one of the best entries in this year’s festival. If you enjoy A Nightmare on Elm Street, you’ll get a good laugh out of this.

The first feature film was Vampire Zombies….From Space. It’s a hilarious film noir about a vampire zombies attempting to take over a small town named Marlow. Darcula, along with his son, and a group of zombies use their powers to turn the town of Marlow into Dracula’s army of zombies.

The feature is exactly what you’d expect in a film festival that focuses on horror and comedy. Black and white noir look gives the film a nice touch. One of the funniest bits is a running joke about the Mayor’s campaign ads.
